La vicenda della motonave Costa Concordia ha profondamente turbato la marineria italiana e quella sorrentina in particolare. La campagna mediatica scatenata dopo il doloroso avvenimento non ha esitato, nella spasmodica ricerca di errori e colpevoli, a porre in grave difficoltà un’intera categoria di lavoratori: la gente di mare.

Appellativi infamanti, discorsi privi di fondamenti tecnici, illazioni azzardate hanno riempito pagine di giornali e infiammato studi televisivi con dibattiti, pareri e domande talvolta sollecitati, con piglio inquisitorio e con molto mestiere, a persone confuse, impreparate o non aventi titoli per dare risposte adeguate.

Aldilà delle vicende che hanno causato il disastro, una maggiore cautela da parte dei mezzi di comunicazione avrebbe, almeno in parte, salvaguardato l’immagine dell’Italia marinara che esce mortificata da questa storia, nonostante le sue tradizioni plurisecolari. E’ venuta a mancare in troppe occasioni la dovuta sensibilità e il necessario equilibrio nel diffondere notizie, talvolta irrilevanti o inesatte, che hanno ulteriormente danneggiato, e non poco, quella immagine. L’Italia è tutta dentro l’acqua di mare, quasi tutta, ma in moltissimi Italiani, quasi tutti, nel loro spirito, il mare non c’è.

E’ questa, purtroppo, la dura realtà.   Se gli italiani avessero contezza della loro marina mercantile, oggi in grandissima parte meridionale, che occupa con onore i primi posti nella marineria mondiale, dei contributi che ha dato e dà alla Nazione in pace e in guerra, della ricchezza nazionale che produce, della quale nessuno parla, allora vi sarebbe certamente più moderazione nelle conclusioni affrettate, nei giudizi sommari, nella ricerca spasmodica di colpevoli e di eroi, o presunti tali, da sbattere in prima pagina o alla gogna.

La gente di mare soffre questa tragedia ma non ha mezzi per far sentire la sua voce, è esposta alle intemperie della cronaca giornalistica e televisiva perché non è ben conosciuta nel Paese, non può e non sa difendersi, abituata a lavorare seriamente, lontano, in silenzio, perché non è protetta da lobby, non può entrare in politica e, spesso, non può neanche votare. Addolorano certe esternazioni malevoli, volgari e di bassa lega, provenienti da parti del nostro Paese che non hanno titoli per farlo perché non posseggono né coscienza marinara, né etica civile e non onorano la bandiera nazionale che i naviganti amano perché rappresenta nel mondo la loro Patria, la loro famiglia, la loro casa.

E affliggono ancora più certe considerazioni che giungono da oltre confine, vere secchiate di fango che non si è esitato a spargere col solito sarcasmo di pseudo superuomini, dimentichi dei disastri e dei crimini che consegnarono alla loro storia.

The unfortunate incident of the Costa Concordia has deeply disturbed the Italian seafaring people in particular those of Sorrento. The ruthless media campaign, which started after the terrible incident, has not wavered in its spasmodic search for the mistakes and perpetrators of human error that led to the incident, this has put an entire category of seafaring workers in great difficulty. Slanderous remarks, discussions without any real technical base and hasty conclusions have filled the pages of newspapers and inflamed television studios with debates, opinions and questions, often in an interrogatory manner and with great expertise, to people who seem confused, unprepared or unqualified to give appropriate answers. Apart from the tragic events that led to the disaster, a little more discretion and caution on the part of the media would have, in the least, safeguarded the image of the Italian seafaring people which has been left mortified by this event, despite their centuries-old tradition in seafaring. In too many occasions, the media has lacked the required sensibility in its spreading of information, the information given has also often been irrelevant or inaccurate, and as a consequence has further damaged the image of the Italian seafaring people. Even though Italy is surrounded by sea, many Italians understand little of the sea and for most of them, the sea does not really exist around them, this is unfortunately the hard truth. If Italians had a better understanding and appreciation of the Italian Merchant Marine, today for the most part from the Southern part of Italy, that occupy with pride a very high position and a reputation of prestige throughout the world, for the contributions that they make and have made to their nation during peace and war, and of the prosperity for the nation that this produces, all of which, unfortunately, is not mentioned , only then , there would be certainly more moderation in the hasty conclusions and passing of judgement, in the search for the villains and the heroes of the situation, to publicly idolize or in turn to publicly disgrace them. The seafaring people are suffering because of these recent events but have no means to voice their opinions, they are exposed to the criticism in newspapers and television because they are not well known in the country, they can not and do not know how to defend themselves. They are used to working seriously and conscientiously, far from home, silently, they are not protected by anyone, are not involved in politics and in many occasions are also not able to vote. Saddened by some of these malicious opinions, many of which considered vulgar and shallow, that have come from parts of our country that do not possess a naval education, and civil ethics and honour for their national flag, the flag that our seafarers have a great love and respect for ,as it represents throughout the world, for them, their country, family, and home. Even more troubling are the remarks arriving from abroad, an inundation of insulting and sarcastic comments from pseudo-supermen, who have forgotten about the disasters and crimes that are a sad part of their own history.
